Elgin is the capital of Moray County and a 30-minute drive from Dufftown. We recommend visiting the following attractions: Cathedral: See for yourself why Elgin Cathedral earned the name the ‘Lantern of the North’. Even as a ruin, the cathedral shines out as one of Scotland’s most ambitious and beautiful medieval buildings. Open daily throughout the year. The audio guide is very helpful to explore this historic site. Moray Motor Museum: houses a superb collection of veteran, vintage, classic cars and motorbikes. Glen Moray Distillery: Lovely classic Speyside distillery with several tours, a shop and a café that serves light lunches, soups and cakes. Open Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm (also open on Saturdays in the summer). Gordon & MacPhail: a famous independent bottler and owner of Benromach distillery and The Cairn distillery, and Red door Gin. The shop currently offers tastings in the temporary shop on Elgin High Street (pre-booking required). The original shop on South Street is undergoing a redevelopment to create a unique whisky experience, incorporating displays, tasting rooms and a liquid library of some of the world’s rarest whiskies. Just outside Elgin you’ll find the Benriach distillery, which produces in 3 distinct styles: classic unpeated, Highland peated and triple distilled. Several tours available and a small shop. If you are not doing all activities mentioned you could combine a visit to Elgin with a visit to the harbour village Lossiemouth (10-minute drive from Elgin).
